When process art remains a product ?
When is process art NOT process art? When it remains a product.
Are you keen to sep away from cards, crafts and products but unwittingly struggle to unleash from planning and continuing to make gifts, cards and presents for children to send home.
Is it therefore a paradox that in our Early Years settings the very ‘process art’ that is PLANNED becomes a PRODUCT itself ?
Crafted, folded and carefully manipulated into a card or gift ?
The aim or end result being the CARD, but we manipulate a process into the ‘activity’
It’s prescriptive - we know OUR aim & OUR focus ?
Surely again WE the adults already have an end ‘product ‘ in mind ?
A card !
Non mobile Babies directed to get their hands in finger paint and making marks on paper ?
Adults sitting them up, fetching the paint and paper, washing their hands. Folding the paper ?
Are we as Early Years educators driven and led by results - thinking of ideas for children to create, to make and perform?
Is it really developmentally appropriate for a four month old baby, 6 month old, even older to make a card?
YES, we understand it’s probably the parents first ever Mother’s or Father’s Day, but surely a beautiful photo of their precious child HAPPY & content is the best gift of all?
Unstaged, undirected - just an authentic beautiful image of their child in action.
Isn’t the BEST gift you can give a parent
PIECE of MIND ?

To see their most precious baby HAPPY and playing Oh my goodness we are always challenging practice aren’t we ?
To unlearn old habits taught and be consciously AWARE of the real reason we are doing something
Who is it for, Adult or CHILD ?
If you actually FEEL the need to create something - to celebrate this special day
That’s ok !! But let’s ensure it’s age and stage appropriate, let’s not kid ourselves it’s ‘process art !
Yes, it’s better than a ‘craptivity’ ( dare I even use the word ?) but does it REALLY have the child at the centre or is it another END result we are after ? https://www.thecuriosityapproa...
Age and stage appropriate
* Better still ! Unburden yourself from being driven by planning, creating gifts, crafts and cards for every child to take home *
Let their ‘undirected’ impromptu artistry, masterpieces & imagery of them in action be saved for that special day 💖
