Spring

"Be careful what you teach. It might interfere with what they are learning." Magda Gerber

We set up an invitation to explore the colour yellow. A couple of daffodils to spark CURIOSITY. However children have their own ideas, thinking and urges. Their own learning styles. Painting a daffodil was NOT on anyone's agenda. Children loved to explore the paint using their senses, to paint on them selves

The member of staff instead of halting learning in it’s tracks, in that moment she shared the experience. Offering a mirror so the child could look at their reflection and continue with their desire to paint their face. She joined in the joy of the moments, with praise, positive body language and facial expressions. This whole situation could have been instinctively shut down and ended quite different, if the mindful key person hadn’t recognised what wondrous learning, cognitive development was unfolding before her eyes.

As adults we need to keep our own emotions and responses in check and consider. Was the children innocently re enacting a real life experience seen previously ? Had the child watched a relative have a soapy shave? Or watched makeup being applied? Who knows ? Maybe they have a enveloping schema ? ( repeated pattern of behaviour ) It may not make sense to us, but it does to the child. What we do know, is that each child is the pilot in their own play & we just have to get out the way ! We have to pause, instead of bulldozing in because they have paint on their face or clothes. Both are 100 % washable Want to know MORE about WHY children do this ? WHY some children are fascinated with painting themselves ? Read the blog below
