Investigating beach treasures

Go back

Summer

One of the children from our settings had collected and bought in a bag full of amazing beach treasures, he was keen to show and share them with his friends. Teamed with magnifying glasses and identification books a simple invitation to take a closer look was created for the children to enjoy.

He had found several different types of shells including oyster, mussels, clam and some spiky one, stones with barnacles on and some empty whelk cases. A whole range of different textures and items to explore.

If children are lucky enough to go and visit the beach we ask the children if they're lucky enough to find a shell of they can bring one back for us to look at and share with our friends. It is such a great talking point and the children often open up more about their experiences which is so lovely to hear.
